Cowes at War

Cowes at War

Cowes during the second world war was not much different from any other southern town containing war effort factories, that is until the night of the 5/6 of May 1942. This is generally termed as the nights of the Blitz when over sixty residents lost their lives and many more would have were it not for the Polish ship Blyskawica that was in White's for a refit and the French Chaussers that were stationed in Marvins Yard.

Interviews with residents that lived through this dreadfull experience bring home the fragile balance between life and death.

The celebration of street parties at the conclussion of the fighting highlight the community spirit that had existed throuhout the conflict.
